[ARCHIVED] There’s a price for getting rid of yucky stuff

Local firm accepts hard-to-dispose-of items on April 1

ECS&R – an environmental services and recycling company based in Evans City – will hold a collection of old electronics and household hazardous wastes in Cranberry on Saturday, April 1. The event, which will take place from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Public Works Operations Center next to Community Park, requires call-ahead preregistration for appointments at 866-815-0016.

The company has a schedule of fees for different categories of items; fees are paid at the collection site. Disposal of normal household hazardous wastes like paints, cleaning chemicals, pesticides, pool chemicals, auto fluids, and flammable liquids is $1.23 per pound. Fluorescent bulbs and rechargeable batteries are $1.20 a pound. Picture tube TV sets are 45¢ a pound; flat-screen and other non-picture tube electronics are 25¢ a pound. Call ahead to determine the cost and acceptability of other items. There are also a few free options, operated by other entities, for recycling certain types of electronics.

Most Goodwill stores will accept working as well as non-working computers and peripheral equipment. And Best Buy stores accept most types of electronics other than TV sets or computer monitors.
