Key intersections throughout Cranberry are constantly monitored by stationary as well as pan-tilt-zoom video cameras to control turning lane signals and identify impending traffic problems – a unique capability for southwestern Pennsylvania. Separately, Carnegie-Mellon University’s Traffic 21 program was formed to take on a two-fold mission: to help local officials manage traffic incidents more effectively and to create adaptive software which would allow traffic signals to be controlled according to real-time conditions. Pairing the two organizations seemed only natural, so an agreement allowing CMU to access and use live video feed from Cranberry’s Traffic Operations Center was approved.
