[ARCHIVED] Pickleball Tournament Garners National Attention

Cranberry will be the center of the pickleball universe during the first weekend in June.

The Cranberry Township Pickleball Association will host the first North Mid-Atlantic Pickleball Tournament at the Graham Park Courts from June 4-6. More than 500 players – and many more on the wait list - from the five-state region will travel to Cranberry for a chance to earn an automatic bid to the National Tournament in California later in 2021.

A total of 19 courts are available for tournament play, with four additional temporary courts in place for warm-ups. The facility features permanent restrooms and a water filling station. Seating is limited, and participants are advised to bring their own chairs. Tents and canopies are also permitted.

Players will be categorized by skill within their age group to keep matches competitive. Age groups include 19+, 35+, 50+, 60+, and 70+. Categories include men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

Due to the expected large turnout, each day of the tournament has a set number of players. If registration for a group is full, a waitlist is available.

In its fourth year of operation, CTPA has over 700 paying members and growing. Much of that growth is attributed to scheduling that guarantees play instead of waiting, and rating procedures that assure equal and tough competition.

Those interested in learning pickleball should start with their PB-1 Beginners or Fast Track for those with racquet/paddle experience from other sports.
