[ARCHIVED] Cutting Through the Noise: Bids being accepted for silencers at Brush Creek plant

gavel_yellow

An eight-year project to upgrade and streamline the Brush Creek Water Pollution Control Facility brought cleaner, more consistent water to Township customers.

Unexpectedly, it also brought elevated noise levels for residents beyond the plant’s property line.

In response, the Township recently tasked GHD to perform an acoustic assessment analysis to find the source of the noise. The study looked at sound level measurements at 10 locations adjacent to the plant. The largest impact was found to be in the Woodbine Estates area.

The noise was found to be created by the intake blowers at the rear of the new MBR building, which houses equipment for the plant’s new membrane filtration system. During peak flow periods, the blower system was found to emit the noise in question.

To reduce that sound, GHD recommended replacing rain hoods on those blowers with acoustic silencers. The project was officially put out to bid during the Jan. 30 Board of Supervisors meeting. Bids are expected to opened Feb. 20.
