[ARCHIVED] Cranberry’s electronic mapping system shows things that aren’t really there

A sophisticated geographic information system which provides digital representations of property lines, voting wards, contour lines, and zoning boundaries as well as physical features of the Township, was the topic of a presentation to Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors on February 2. Much of that data is displayed on Property Finder – the name of Cranberry’s interactive map software – using information which is in the public domain and freely available online to anyone with a computer, tablet or smartphone. Other layers of information are only available to authorized Township staff members and used for traffic planning, stormwater management, water system asset location and related municipal functions. Cranberry’s first responders and public works personnel also make use of the GIS system to pinpoint emergencies, locate hydrants, and execute other urgent assignments. Cranberry’s GIS system will also be the topic of a Coffee and Conversation gathering with Township Manager Jerry Andree at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 9 in Council Chambers. A demonstration will provide navigation tips and show how various layers of data plotted on the Township’s maps can be used by residents, developers and entrepreneurs to plan landscaping, building improvements and new businesses site locations.
