Earlier this year, three specially-outfitted and ruggedized mountain bikes were acquired by Cranberry’s police department from Trek of Pittsburgh while four of the Township’s officers received certification from the International Police Mountain Bike Association in techniques of cycling with patrolling as a component of that cycle training. Anyone attending CTCC Community Days will be able to witness the first high-profile public rollout of the service, Sgt. William Ahlgren reported to Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors on June 30. Bike patrols will enable officers to interact more closely with the people they serve while supplementing the department’s current vehicle-based patrol capabilities. The department anticipates using the bicycles to increase patrols in Township parks along pedestrian pathways, which are difficult to patrol using squad cars. Bicycle officers will also participate in Township and school district bike safety rodeos. Eventually, Township police expect to take bicycles with them as they patrol residential neighborhoods.
