Cranberry Township has installed automatic external defibrillators, or AEDs in its Municipal Center, Waterpark, Golf course, maintenance buildings and in other public locations throughout the Township, as well as in each of its police and EMS vehicles. AEDs automatically diagnose life-threatening cardiac conditions and use a combination of voice and visual commands to guide individuals administering the treatment through their use. AEDs treat patients by applying an electrical pulse to stop an irregular heartbeat and allow the heart to reestablish a more normal rhythm. The units, some of which were formerly assigned to police patrol cars, are kept in wall-mounted cabinets and inspected monthly by Township staff.
