A series of lifelike scenarios, designed to train police in tactical responses to mass shootings, were carried out under the supervision of instructors from Penn State University’s Fayette campus at Haine Middle School in Cranberry on October 13. Altogether, 11 law enforcement agencies from around the area were involved in the training exercise, which was witnessed by dozens of teachers – some of whom played roles in the drill as part of their in-service training – but not by students, for whom it was the Columbus Day school holiday. Initiated by Cranberry Township police in partnership with Seneca Valley School District, the drill included local and county EMS, as well as fire police responding to the simulated emergency. It was the most recent in a series of cooperative projects between Cranberry police and the school district At their November 6 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors received a briefing on the exercise and shown a documentary about the event.
