The Township recently received a proposal from Penn Energy to lease subsurface oil and gas rights beneath 311 acres of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course for extraction by way of horizontal drilling from a proposed well in Beaver County, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors learned at its December 4 meeting. When the Township first received the proposal, Assistant Township Manager Duane McKee informally solicited other producers in the region for their potential interest in bidding on the lease rights, but none came forward. Penn Energy’s proposal specifically bars any surface activity or disturbance on the leased acreage, and Audubon International has assured the Township that subsurface extraction would not affect Cranberry Highland’s coveted sanctuary certification. The Board agreed to consider the lease at its next meeting, December 11.
