Use of wireless communication technologies has been exploding along with the need for bandwidth, access, and the technologies to support them. Recently, they have included the introduction of mini-cellular transmitters, formally known as Distributed Antenna Systems, to fill service gaps between the tower-based facilities that handle most voice and data traffic. Crown Communications, a contractor working on mini-tower installations for Verizon Wireless, is planning to install several units in Cranberry, so the Township has been working to update its regulations as they apply to wireless communication systems. At its July 31 meeting, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors heard testimony on the ordinance update effort. The Board will continue hearing testimony at its August 26 meeting, at which time the final ordinance revision is expected to be presented.
