[ARCHIVED] Do REAL girls do science?

Brush Creek Wastewater Treatment plant lab technician Larissa Hoover and Public Works Pretreatment Administrator Rhonda Zellhart were guest speakers on Wednesday, January 22 at Seneca Valley Middle School’s STEM Fems Meeting. The new program, led by teacher Julie Smith and principal Andrea Peck, is designed to encourage girls to explore careers in science, math, engineering, technology and medicine.

During their visit, Larissa and Rhonda described the circumstances that led them to careers in the biological sciences. Following an initial meet-and-greet session, they demonstrated several hands-on techniques currently used in water quality testing. They also provided the girls with information concerning the top 20 professions in the sciences, including educational requirements, potential employers, and job prospects. Approximately 50 girls participated in the event.
