Developer Gary Sippel’s application for preliminary land development and conditional use, as well as a related site subdivision application for Cranberry Springs – a large scale commercial development project at the northeast corner of I-79 and Route 228 – received final approval from Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors at their December 5 meeting. A recommendation for approval had been received from the Planning Advisory Commission in October. The initial phase of the 90-acre project will be anchored by a joint UPMC-Pittsburgh Penguins training and sports medicine facility which was announced at an on-site celebration October 2. Other Phase One features will include restaurants, a hotel, and retail buildings. Motor vehicle traffic will initially approach Cranberry Springs from a new intersection with Mars Road. Eventually, an underpass below Route 228, beginning in Cranberry Woods at the I-79 northbound exit ramp, will be added as well. Extensive streetscape improvements, including water features and bicycle lanes, will follow the project’s internal roadway system.
