Learn About the Golden Thirteen

The Golden Thirteen small flyer

Kick off Summer Reading with a presentation about an overlooked chapter of U.S. history.

In 1944, sixteen African American sailors arrived at Great Lakes for a groundbreaking officers’ training course. Thirteen of those men would become the first African American commissioned officers in Navy history.

On Tuesday, June 7 at 6:30 pm, we will explore the experiences of the Golden Thirteen at Great Lakes, their time in the fleet, and the lasting legacy of these pioneers. Presented by Tricia Menke of the National Museum of the American Sailor.

Admission is free and registration is required.
