There may not be a giant arch to signify its importance, but Route 228 and Freedom Road corridor is surely the gateway to growth in the region.
The Board of Supervisors at their December 10 meeting continued a history of pursuing expansion on those roadways by approving contracts for design work.
Projects to expand Freedom Road from Commonwealth Drive to Haine School Road, and from Haine School Road to the Beaver County line will be partially paid for using Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Developments (BUILD) grants secured by Butler County in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Those projects are anticipated to begin in 2021 and 2023.
The approved contracts include an agreement with KCI Technologies Inc. for preliminary design work for Phase 2 of the project, as well as to serve as construction consultant for Phase 1. Work is expected to begin in 2021. This is part of a partnership agreement with Butler County to advance these improvements in the Freedom Road Corridor.
Elsewhere, an ongoing PennDOT project, the replacement of the Turnpike Bridge, is expected to be completed in the spring.
