The Board of Supervisors
Cranberry Township is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. Members are elected at-large and serve six-year terms. The Board sets policy for the Township, adopts its annual budget, and enacts ordinances regulating activities within its jurisdiction.

Meetings of the Board of Supervisors
All Board of Supervisors meetings begin at 6:30 PM, unless otherwise advertised. They are held in the Council Chambers of Cranberry Township’s Municipal Center unless otherwise noted. Special meetings of the Board of Supervisors may be called at any time, and are advertised in the Butler Eagle. Printed agendas are available at the time of the meeting and in advance on the Township’s Calendar
Meetings of Boards and Commissions
The Board meets twice a month. Its Agenda Preparation meetings normally take place on the last Thursday of each month. At these meetings, items which require action at their regular meeting the following week, such as property development proposals, will be reviewed by the Board. However, action may be taken at any properly advertised Board meeting. Public comment on any item, on or off of the agenda, is welcome at all Board meetings.
Regular meetings are usually held the first Thursday of each month. Public comment on any item, on or off of the agenda, is welcome at all Board meetings. If a Public Hearing is on the agenda, a legal stenographer will record all comments. After the Hearing has been introduced and opened, the Chairman will ask if anyone wishes to speak on the issue of the Hearing. Anyone making comments must be sworn-in.
Minutes are taken at all meetings to record the formal actions taken by the Board and to summarize its comments and discussion.
The Board employs a professional staff under the direction of a Township Manager/Secretary. Several staff members attend Board meetings to assist the Board and to answer any questions from Board members. Those usually in attendance include:

, at 724-776-4806, x1103 any weekday. The Manager may be able to resolve your issue without the delay of waiting for a meeting of the Board.
However, you may ask your question or make your comments to the Board during the Public Comment period at any of their meetings. But you need to understand that the purpose of the Public Comment period is for the Board to listen to residents, not to debate with them or attempt to answer lengthy questions. Residents with questions in need of follow-up will be referred to the Township Manager.
If you come to the Board meeting as part of a group that shares the same concern, organize your group’s comments ahead of time to have one spokesperson. If more than one person needs to speak, make sure they don’t repeat what another group member has already said. Wait until the Board Chairman recognizes you before speaking, then identify yourself and speak clearly so that your comments will be heard. Even if you are upset or angry, try to remain calm and give a thoughtful presentation; remarks that come across as a rant do not earn the Board’s serious attention. Do not applaud, boo, or attempt to intimidate other speakers who have a different point of view.
If you plan to address a concern at a Board meeting, it helps to do some advance work. Check the website to verify the meeting time and see the current agenda; check again on the day of the meeting; sometimes things change. Take time to nail down the facts and relevant background about the issue you want to address so that your point of view comes across effectively. You are welcome to bring your notes along. Brevity is always appreciated. You are also free to leave the meeting at any time after presenting your comments.

Glossary of Meeting Terms
is a formal proceeding held pursuant to public notice by the Township and conducted during a public meeting. It is intended to inform the Board and obtain public comment prior to taking action. Public Hearings are held for any amendment to the zoning and/or subdivision ordinance, any action on a Planned Residential Development, or any request for Conditional Use Approval. Hearings follow specific legal procedures.
is a meeting of the Board of Supervisors which has been advertised as required by the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act. The Act requires public agencies, including municipal governments, to take all official actions, and conduct all deliberations leading up to those official actions, at public meetings.
is the minimum number of Board members required to transact business. A majority of the five-member Township Board constitutes a quorum. Therefore at least three Board members are needed to transact business at a public meeting.
is a formal expression by vote of the Board.
is an enforceable law enacted by the Board. It is required to be advertised in advance of the meeting at which it will be considered.
are private meetings of the Board in which they are permitted to discuss four topics: litigation, personnel issues, contract negotiations, and acquisition of land. All Executive Sessions are announced, including their purpose, by the Chairman of the Board.
is an attorney appointed by the Board to advise the Township.
Public Comment Period
is the time when visitors can bring matters before the Board. Speakers are asked to state their name and to be conscious of the limited time available to the Board for transacting its business. Public Comment periods are typically scheduled at the start of each meeting.
