What Businesses Can Do to be More Sustainable

Companies of any size can make a big difference in reducing environmental impact in Cranberry.

SMALL CHANGES:

  • If your business would like to make progress toward sustainability but has limited resources, you won't regret starting with these easy and inexpensive steps!
  • Encourage alternative transportation by starting a car-pool sign-up or offering perks for biking or walking to work. Check out our Commuter Information page.
  • Enable your computer's energy-saving features. Features like "sleep" mode are built into your operating system and will save energy instantly when computers are not in use!
  • Create a workplace recycling program. Designate a person or team to oversee the initiative.

Did You Know

BIGGER CHANGES:

For companies that want to make sustainability a top priority, take these steps and you will see an increase in your triple bottom line!

  • Pursue the Sustainable Business Designation. We have worked with Sustainable Pittsburgh to create a special label for sustainable businesses. Check out our page to learn more!
  • Pursue national Energy Star ratings or LEED building certifications to gain a competitive advantage. Third party certifications show consumers that you are serious about the environment.
  • Take alternative transportation to the next level by considering tele-commuting. Review each position in your company to consider feasibility, and you could drastically reduce your overall footprint. And remember, you can adapt this at whatever level is right for your business. It can also save you money!
  • In addition to a workplace recycling program, try to create less waste in the first place. Designate a waste-free lunch day once per week and see how much trash you save! On these days, ask employees to bring lunch in a re-usable container or bag, their own silverware, a cloth napkin, and a re-fillable drink container.
