New buildings offer a great opportunity to incorporate many green practices into your project. Think about:

  • SITE: Try to select a site that staff and clients can access by walking or biking. They will appreciate these options. Also think about the benefits of mixed-use development areas.
  • MATERIALS: Whatever materials you use, try to source them locally. This will help the local economy and reduce the distance your materials will travel. Also consider reducing waste by using materials that are recycled and recyclable.
  • WATER EFFICIENCY: Save water and save money! Consider native landscaping and installing low-flush toilets.


Moving to a new location or planning an upgrade of your current space? Do it green!

  • Install motion sensors for lighting in rooms.
  • Consider individual, removable carpet tiles, which can be replaced in high-traffic areas without the need for replacing the entire carpet. This saves money and materials!
  • Consider programmable thermostats which are designed to save you energy and money while keeping spaces comfortable.
  • Add aerators to your faucets and cut your water consumption immediately!

The Regional Learning Alliance earned a LEED Silver rating by doing many things including using local & recycled materials, water efficient landscaping, and providing bike storage and changing rooms for those who commute by bike.
Westinghouse earned a LEED Certified rating by diverting construction waste and using low-emitting materials, among other things.
