Detecting Toilet Leaks

Did you know...
  • Your toilet uses the most water in your home.
  • Toliets account for 40-50% of all household usage.
  • Toilets are most often the source of household water loss.
  • Leaks can waste thousands of gallons a month, doubling, and in some cases tripling your water usage.
  • Toliet leaks are often times silent, resulting in undetected leaks that can last for months before being noticed.

Toilet leaks usually occur where water is leaking down the overflow pipe and can easily be seen draining past the plunger ball and into the bowl.  Plunger ball leaks are easily detected by adding food coloring to the toilet tank. Use a color that will be easily noticed such as blue or green. If the coloring enters the bowl within 15 minutes, you have a leak. Also, be sure to replace worn  washers and taps. These types of water loss can be easily corrected, and are relatively inexpensive.
