Why is the federal census important to a municipal government?
Cranberry is very interested in securing a full count in this year’s census. Census data is used to allocate more than $400 billion a year in federal funding programs which are driven by population formulas. That amounts to more than $1,200 annually for every man, woman and child in America. For Cranberry, it comes to more than $35 million a year – more than the Township’s entire 2010 budget. So the Board of Supervisors has made ensuring a complete count of everyone living in Cranberry – regardless of their legal status – a major priority.

What did the census brochure that Cranberry just mailed cost us?
The cost to produce, print and mail the ‘Making Cranberry Count’ Census brochure was about $3,975. The Census Bureau is encouraging communities to partner with them to obtain a full count, so they gave us a grant of $3,000 toward that brochure.

How does the census affect our state funding?
Cranberry receives a small fraction of Pennsylvania’s gasoline tax for local road maintenance according to a formula. Part of that formula is based on our official census number. For every resident in our official count, we receive about $140 more in state road resurfacing assistance. So every 500 residents allows us to resurface one mile of Township roadway. Every resident missed in the count results in federal and state tax dollars – which have already been paid by our residents – being diverted to other jurisdictions and other areas of the country.

How does our local tax burden compare to our state and federal taxes?
A full and accurate count of our residents is essential for a fair share of the federal and state tax dollars that Cranberry residents pay to be returned here. Right now, the average Cranberry Township taxpayer pays about $27,000 in federal taxes, about $8,000 to the state, and about $700 to the Township a year.
